Melissa Etheridge is an instantly recognizable name, and for good reason. The singer and songwriter has cultivated a decades-long music career that has been met with significant praise and acclaim. Practically everyone at least knows of one of her songs, and she still has a massive international fan base. Melissa Etheridge is a superstar, and she’s also a marijuana advocate.
It was after her breast cancer diagnosis that she began to use medical cannabis to obtain relief from the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiation necessary for her cancer treatments. Melissa credits the plant with getting her through her battle against cancer, and doesn’t believe that it’s medicinal value is limited to severe conditions like her own. In fact, Melissa believes that “everybody who uses it is doing so medicinally, whether they consider it so or not.”
Even if you just smoke to wind down at the end of a day and help yourself to get a good night’s rest, Melissa considers that to be good medicine.
She even has her own marijuana company, Etheridge Farms. Her aim is to bring products into the growing marijuana marketplace that focus on mental and physical wellness, as well as educate others about the medical properties of the much-beloved plant.
Her previous admissions to smoking pot with her wife Linda and her adult children Beckett and Bailey have gotten Melissa some harsh criticism from those who don’t share her views on marijuana. To the critics, she says, “Beyond judging my mothering, I wish the discussion could be about people that are spending time in prison, whose lives have completely been wrecked for [drug] possession.”
Melissa Etheridge serves to remind us that good medicine is more than treatment for our conditions. It’s whatever encourages overall wellness, relaxation and self-care as well, as marijuana does. In her day to day life, as well as during her fight against cancer twelve years ago, she gives the plant a lot of credit in helping her to maintain her wellness and a healthy outlook on life.
