Doctor, Activist Arrested in Sydney

Since 1990, Dr. Katelaris has been researching the effects of cannabis on the human body and has made quite a name for himself in the marijuana industry ever since. He is to appear in Hornsby Local Court today, after his arrest yesterday. The charges filed against him include marijuana possession, having an indictable amount of pot, and possessing the proceeds of a crime.

Prior to his arrest, Katelaris had been in attendance at the Hemp Industry Forum in Sydney that took place over the weekend. Police had made an appearance on the final day of the forum after receiving complaints that there was a large crop of cannabis on display. No arrests were made at the forum because the low-THC plants present had been approved before the event took place.

On Sunday, the doctor was featured in a Channel Seven report that showed him giving cannabis oil to a four-year-old child. The child has been removed from his parents since that incident.

This is not the first time that Katelaris has been criticized for his actions or perspectives regarding medical pot. He’s quite outspoken about the fact that he treats as many as fifty children with cannabis oils, all of whom suffer from seizure disorders. The oil he provides is CBD oil, which is made without the psychoactive component of marijuana, known as THC.

Last year, the Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) was deemed to have been directly involved in injecting two women with CBD oil to treat ovarian cancer. After he was found to be giving the injections to these women, the HCCC declared that he had been involved in more breaches of code and conduct.

His arrest yesterday was not the first, either. Katelaris had been arrested numerous times before for marijuana-related charges, but seems undeterred.

The doctor’s actions have stricken a chord in the social circles of marijuana advocates. Some strongly disapprove of his unregulated use of CBD oils, while others praise him for trying to treat people with the medicine that they want. Regardless of how you feel about his actions, there’s one thing that we can all agree on: the man is very dedicated to his cause.
